Thermapen One Review

The Thermapen One is the flagship in a long line of instant-read thermometers from the UK maker ETI. It is a fold-out-probe spot thermometer: you open the probe, touch it to the food, and read the temperature almost immediately. It is designed for quick, confident checks rather than left-in-the-oven monitoring, which is a different job.

Speed is the headline. The One takes a full reading in about one second, which in practice means you can open the lid or the oven door, check a temperature and close it again before much heat escapes - useful on a hot pizza oven or a BBQ where every second with the lid up costs you. Accuracy is quoted at plus or minus 0.3C across the everyday cooking range, and each unit ships with a free traceable calibration certificate, so you are not taking the accuracy on trust. For food-safety checks, where a few degrees is the line between safe and not, that precision matters.

The One is built to live outdoors. The body is fully waterproof to IP67, so you can rinse it under the tap rather than wiping a delicate device, and the case uses an antimicrobial plastic. A motion sensor wakes it as you open the probe and sleeps it when you set it down, and the backlit display auto-rotates through 360 degrees so it reads the right way up in either hand. It runs a long time on a single AAA battery and carries a 5-year guarantee, which tells you how the maker expects it to hold up.
